Three islands, three personalities
The Bay Islands lie just off the north coast of Honduras, all sitting on the Mesoamerican Reef. They are close together geographically but worlds apart in feel. Choosing the right mix, or combining all three, depends on your budget and what kind of trip you want.
Compare the islands
| Island | Vibe | Best for | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roatan | Resorts and beaches | Families, couples, easy diving | Mid to high |
| Utila | Backpacker and dive town | Budget divers, whale sharks | Low |
| Cayos Cochinos | Protected reserve | Day trips, pristine reef | Day trip only |
Roatan, the polished island
Roatan is the largest and most developed Bay Island. It has the widest range of hotels, the famous West Bay Beach, and dozens of dive shops. It is the easiest island to fly into directly, with an international airport, and the best base for families. See our full Roatan diving guide for dive site details.
Utila, the budget dive capital
Utila is smaller, scruffier, and beloved by backpackers. It is one of the cheapest places on Earth to get scuba certified and is famous as one of the most reliable spots in the Caribbean to encounter whale sharks, which pass through in the spring and autumn. Accommodation and food are noticeably cheaper than Roatan.
Cayos Cochinos, the pristine reserve
Cayos Cochinos is a cluster of small islands and cays designated as a marine protected area. Because of its protected status there are no big resorts, so it is visited as a day trip by boat. Expect untouched reef, clear water, a small Garifuna fishing community, and some of the best snorkeling in Honduras.
How to connect the islands
- Roatan, reached by international flights or by ferry from La Ceiba
- Utila, reached by ferry from La Ceiba or short domestic flight
- Between Roatan and Utila, route through La Ceiba on the mainland
- Cayos Cochinos, reached by boat tour from La Ceiba area or Roatan
Suggested route
A classic week long trip starts with three or four nights in Roatan for diving and beach time, then a hop through La Ceiba to Utila for budget diving and whale shark season. Add a Cayos Cochinos day trip if your dates allow. Pair the islands with a mainland highlight like the Copan Ruins for a fuller Honduras experience.

Roatan and Utila are connected by ferry to and from La Ceiba on the mainland, and by short domestic flights. There is no direct daily public ferry between the two islands, so most travelers route through La Ceiba when hopping between them.
Yes, but only as a day trip. Cayos Cochinos is a protected marine reserve, so there are no large resorts. Boat tours run from the mainland near La Ceiba and from Roatan, usually including snorkeling, a beach stop, and a visit to a small Garifuna fishing village.
