Why dive in Roatan
Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras and it sits directly on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second longest barrier reef on Earth after Australia. The reef wraps around the island, which means world class wall dives, coral gardens, and swim throughs are often just a five to ten minute boat ride from the dock.
Water temperature stays between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius all year, so a thin wetsuit or even a rash guard is enough. Visibility regularly tops 25 meters and can reach 40 meters in the calm months. On top of all that, Roatan and its neighbor Utila are among the cheapest places in the world to get certified.

Certification and prices
Roatan is one of the best value places in the world to learn. A PADI Open Water course takes three to four days and costs roughly 350 to 450 USD, including all materials and gear. Certified divers pay around 70 to 90 USD for a two tank boat dive, and multi dive packages bring the per dive price down further. Discover Scuba sessions for first timers cost about 90 to 120 USD.
Most dive shops cluster in West End and West Bay. They run morning and afternoon boats, so you can fit two or three dives into a single day. If you are short on time, pair diving with snorkeling sessions on rest days to stay out of the water long enough to fly home safely.
Tips for diving Roatan
- Dive the morning boats, the sea is calmest and visibility is at its best early
- Bring a reef hook free attitude, the reef is protected so do not touch or stand on coral
- Pack reef safe sunscreen, regular sunscreen harms the Mesoamerican Reef
- Leave 18 to 24 hours before flying, plan your last dive at least a day before departure
