Snorkeling on the Mesoamerican Reef
Roatan is part of the Mesoamerican Reef, the same reef system that draws divers from around the world. The good news for snorkelers is that much of the best coral sits in shallow water, sometimes only two or three meters deep, which means you can see turtles, parrotfish, and brain coral without ever strapping on a tank.
The island has dozens of snorkel spots, but a handful stand out for accessibility and marine life. Below are the ones worth planning around.
1. West Bay Beach
West Bay is the postcard beach of Roatan and also its best shore snorkeling. The reef wall runs parallel to the beach and starts just a short swim out. Enter through one of the marked channels rather than swimming directly over the shallow coral. Mornings are calmest. You can rent gear from beach shops or bring your own.
2. The Blue Channel
Near Sandy Bay, the Blue Channel is a sandy cut through the reef that funnels fish and creates dramatic coral walls on either side. It is a little deeper, so it is usually visited on a short boat snorkeling tour. Expect schools of fish, the occasional eagle ray, and excellent visibility.
3. The Aquarium
Also off Sandy Bay, the Aquarium earns its name. Calm, clear, and packed with reef fish, it is a favorite for families and first time snorkelers. The protected location means gentle conditions most days. Boat tours often combine the Aquarium with the Blue Channel in a single trip.
What you will see
- Sea turtles, hawksbill turtles often feed on the shallow reef
- Parrotfish and angelfish, colorful and abundant on every site
- Brain and elkhorn coral, healthy formations close to the surface
- Stingrays, gliding over the sandy channels
- Schools of blue tang and sergeant majors, swirling around the reef edges
Snorkeling tips
- Go in the morning, the wind picks up in the afternoon and stirs up the water
- Use the reef channels, never walk or stand on the coral
- Wear reef safe sunscreen or a rash guard, to protect both your skin and the reef
- Book a boat tour for the deeper spots, the Blue Channel and Aquarium are best reached by boat
